The mutant-hunting robot Sentinels first appeared in The X-Men #14 (1965), but the makers of X-Men: Days of Future Past wanted something fresh and new. "They're biomechanical weapons," production designer John Myhre told Empire magazine. "We had to come up with what would be the ultimate version that could actually, in principle, stop the X-Men. We started with this idea that they were almost made up of magnetic plates slapped over one another. The plates could contract or grow, so the Sentinel can be skinny to get through a small space or the plates can open up to become a bigger shape." One of the main artists working on the designs of the machines is Goran Bukvic.

Bukvic is a professional concept artist who's worked on major projects like Tron: Evolution and Halo 4.

"Exploring Sentinels and how they move. I saw the movie last night and I gotta say I'm really pleased with animation, modelling, effects and eerie feel they brought to every scene they were in. I kinda wanted to see more of them. It was definitely a challenge designing these guys but extremely fun at the same time. Big props to Virginie Bourdin (AD) and uber talented Maciej Kuciara, whom I worked with directly, as well as to all the crew at MPC that made Sentinels as they are, from conception to final." - Goran Bukvic

"Early concept, one of the first sketches I did. At the time, it was still in the air whether they should have male or female form. They ended up being androgynous in the end. Good call!" - Goran Bukvic

"More exploratory sketches, trying to come up with a cool way Sentinels break through walls." - Goran Bukvic
