Check out my interview with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes concept artist Justin Fields!

Twentieth Century Fox has announced that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will hit Blu-Ray on December 9th with extended features and it promises to be the biggest release of December. The film is breaking records left and right and that's in large part due to the stunning visuals. I did a brief email interview with one of the talented concept illustrators on the film named Justin Fields.

Justin "Goby" Fields is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood movies like Iron Man 3 (2013), The Wolverine (2013) and Noah (2014).

Read on to find out how an Amazon tribe inspired the film, what Ceasar almost looked like and his incredible new studio IronKlad Studios!

Maurice Mitchell: What did you spend most of your time on in this project?
Justin Goby Fields: Most of my time was spent on developing Blue Eyes, Cornelia (Caesar's Wife), Koba's crew and a little bit of time on Caesar. Our early designs were very apocalyptic. But, when the script changed, we ended up going very tribal.

MM: Director James Chinlund said they spent a lot of time studying primate culture. What's the most surprising way this influenced your designs? If at all?
JF: We looked at alot of reference and really settled on some Amazon tribes as our goal. The director really responded well to the overall look and feel of the tribes that were very far removed from modern influences. I found a lot of it very facinating and quickly found myself watching a lot of documentaries on the subject.

MM: You also worked on the previous film Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. What most impressed you about the designs in the last film?
JF: I was most impressed by the quality and the realism. Weta continues to amaze me with their artistry in bringing characters to life. Seeing Jerad Marantz's Koba make it to the screen and with every inch of detail there was amazing.

MM: I've talked to Jerad about that, and he's amazed by it as well! What was it like working with Chinlund?
JF: Always an amazing time. Can't wait for the next one! ;)

MM: So, what's coming up next for you?
Well, since working on this film, I have branched out and started my own studio called IronKlad Studios here in Hollywood. We specialize in Character, Creature Designs, as well as Matte Painting, Story-boarding, IP creation, Commercials and Motion Graphics. In house, we are currently working on bringing three of our own projects to the silver screen. We can't wait to show more, but for now those have to be hush hush. =D
